Violet wands were originally invented by Nikola Tesla as a device used in electrotherapy. After Tesla and other manufacturers of this device failed to prove any benefit of its use, production virtually seized in the 1940s. Since the 1980s, violet wands have made a comeback as a sexual stimulation device, especially popular in the BDSM community. Violet wands are generally considered safer than TENS units.

Violet wands use a Tesla coil in the handle to create a high voltage, high frequency electrical current. The current is controlled by the tesla coil to stay within safe limits. The handle is usually connected directly to the wall outlet. It also houses adjustments for intensity and an on/off switch. At the other end of the handle, most wands have a standard 7/16 (US) or 10mm (Europe) receptacle. This receptacle can take different shaped glass or metal electrodes (rare). Glass electrodes are usually filled with gas mixtures to create a colored glow. Metal attachments are usually shaped like a probe and are used for anal or vaginal insertion. Metal probes are known to create stronger sensations.
