Torture masks have been in use for several centuries. They can be used simply to mark people for their wrong doing but can also contain gags, blindfolds and torture devices. Small blades, needles and spikes on the inside could make wearing the uncomfortable and often cause bleeding and lasting scaring. Today, torture masks often feature a rubber spikes on the inside - hard enough to be uncomfortable but not enough to create permanent damage. If the rubber spikes leave small bruises, the straps holding the mask were too tight.
