Bondage has been used in most if not all cultures around the world for torture as well as play. Over time some cultures have developed very unique styles, sometimes elevating bondage to an art form.
Japanese Bondage
One of the most distinct and formalized bondage styles. The bondage is done almost exclusively with rope and centers around the aesthetics of the position and has been practiced for several centuries. You can read more about it here
European Bondage
European bondage is relatively crude when compared to Japanese bondage. This form of bondage was derived from centuries of torture in the dark ages and centers around restraining the subject for torture. This was done to extract confessions and the mutilation or death of the subject was usually an acceptable result. Death and injury are no longer the goal of European bondage but the rough and uncomfortable positions remain. European bondage allows any form of restraints, be it rope, chains or any other improvised material handy.
American Bondage
There are two different definitions of american bondage but neither is very commonly used.
Most references to American bondage on the web center around slavery before the time of the civil war. Here the goal is to restrain the subject for punishment.
The second definition describes simply any form of bondage that centers around restraining the subject for the purposes of sex.
