A straitjacket (sometimes also spelled straight jacket or straightjacket) is an outfit with extra long sleeves to secure the arms of the subject. The sleeves are usually folded across the front and then tied behind the back to secure the arms. Most secure straitjackets have buckles to be linked to other pieces or straps running between the legs to keep the jacket from being pushed up and over the head. Another part to keep the strait jacket secure is that it needs to be as tight as possible around the chest of the wearer. This prevents movement of the shoulders and keeps the arms safely in place.
Straitjackets used in BDSM are most often made of leather but traditional canvas and rubber models are readily available.
