A scalpel is a very sharp blade connected to a thin handle. The blade is often exchangeable to reduce waste and keep cost down. Scalpels can be bought at medical supply stores as well as arts and crafts stores. Medical scalpels are usually much more expensive but they are higher quality, sharper and usually sterile. If you re using unsterilised scalpels, you need to sterilize it yourself to avoid infection.
Scalpels are also used for various forms of scaring.
