Fire play is one of the most impressive forms of BDSM play. It is fairly easy to learn but you need to start with caution.
For other forms of fire play look at wax, cupping and scar.
Safety
The first part of preparing for fire play is preparing for the things that can go wrong. Prepare a bowl of cold water (little or no ice if possible). Also prepare at least one wet and one dry towel or rag. The dry towel can be used to soak up any spilled alcohol while the damp towel is good for smothering flames. You should take time to familiarize yourself with treatment methods for burns.
Another piece of important equipment is a fire extinguisher. Using the fire extinguisher on a person is only a last resort (that is what the wet towels are for) but if any of the equipment or furniture catches fire it is an important tool.
Materials
Aside the safety materials you will need alcohol and a source of fire. Rubbing alcohol from the grocery store (70 to 90% Isopropyl) does well. Other people use alcoholic drinks with high alcohol content. This provides a good aroma, however these forms of more complex alcohols tend to evaporate slower which causes more liquid drops and pools (see below).
There are many choices for ignition sources. Which one is chosen mostly depends on the desired look in the scene. However you should avoid any fire source that can crumble, fall apart or stick on contact since that can cause small burns to the skin. You can also chose to use a violet wand as your ignition source. The spark generated when the wand comes close to the skin is usually strong enough to set the alcohol vapors on fire.
Beginners Technique
When playing with fire, it is important to remember that it is the vapors that is supposed to burn, not the liquid alcohol. To be safe, fill a small glass with alcohol and store the rest out of harms way. Next you need to select the area to play with. Avoid any overhanging parts (i.e. breasts) as they will trap the heat and any very sensitive area (head, genitals, inside of the arms and legs). Also remember that hair can singe easily. For beginners the back is usually used as the first places for experimentation. Then light your fire source. Use Q-tips or small cotton balls to apply the alcohol to the skin. You can squeeze the cotton to extract the right amount of alcohol. You will easily notice when you re using too little because it will evaporate too quickly. Too much is also hard to spot. Whenever you see pools or drops of alcohol on the skin you know you ve used too much. If you end up setting a small pool of alcohol on fire use your hand or a damp towel to extinguish the flame quickly before it can cause damage to the skin.
Advanced Technique
Once you worked out your basic technique, you can move on to more complex scenes. Try multiple spots or thin streaks. Combination with electro play, carving and scar can also be done.
