Carving is a technique where some portion of skin is cut with a sharp knife or scalpel. Usually, the cuts are made so deep that the cuts will bleed and leave an image of blood on the subject. Often the carving is also done with two scalpels held in a V shape to cut thin strips of skin out to create stronger scars. After the carving is complete, the skin will scab and eventually possibly scar.
Since carvings take a lot of time and are usually considered art (similar to tattoos) many people attempt to create stronger scars by using ash or other inert materials.
