Cutting off blood circulation is one of the most mistakes made in bondage play. Blood transports nutrients and oxygen to all parts of the human body. If the circulation is cut off, the lack of oxygen and the build up of pressure can cause heath issues.

Signs of cut off circulation

Poor circulation because of tight bondage has several early warning signs:

* Discoloration: The body part usually gets darker, turning purple or looses color. This is one of the earliest signs of cut off circulation
* Feeling of pressure: This happens the strongest if the veins carrying blood too the heart are blocked while the arteries that pump blood into the body part are clear. The pain from this type of circulation issue can be severe.
* Tingling of the cut off body part: Tingling is one of the first signs of lack of oxygen.
* Numbness of the cut off body part: Just like tingling, numbness can be caused by lack of oxygen.
* Tingling or numbness of unrestrained body parts: This is usually a sign that the circulatory system is overloaded and can does no longer function properly.

What to do

If you recognize circulation issues early enough (before tingling or numbness set in) it is often enough to loosen the restraints slightly without interrupting the whole scene.
If tingling or numbness have already started, removing the restraints is recommended. Normal circulation should resume immediately and the numbness or tingling should subside in a few minutes. Gentle massage can be used to speed up the process. If the body part does not feel normal in a few minutes it is usually a sign of circulatory problems beyond the bondage and a physical checkup is recommended.
If you experience numbness of unrestrained body parts (i.e. tingling of the arm after being bound at the wrists) it is usually a sign of poor circulation. Discontinue the scene immediately and seek professional help. Conditions like that can easily lead to heart issues.

Bondage for people with poor circulation

Bondage for people that have been diagnosed with poor circulation requires special attention. It is recommended to stay with wide leather restraints as they are flexible and the wide leather does not cut into the skin. For hand cuffs make sure they are double locking. Rope bondage is not recommended for people with poor circulation, however if you take that step, use soft, extra wide rope made of an elastic material.
