S&M - short for Sadism and Masochism - is any form of sex play that centers around pain. The partner inflicting the pain is called the sadist, the person on the receiving end is the masochist.
While S&M is common among people interested in BDSM, many sadists and masochists have no interest in other forms of kinky practices.
