The german term Schandmantel can be translated as “shame jacket”. It is also known as Schandtonne or spanish coat. It is not a torture device but designed for humiliation of the subject. The wearer would be subjected to verbal and physical humiliation - from being called names to having rotten vegetables thrown at you.
The Schandmantel is usually made of wood and resembles a barrel that opens slightly to allow the subject to be inserted into it. There are some reports that this was later misinterpreted as a iron maiden.
