Punishment, in the D/s sense, refers to anything more than corrections for things the submissive partner has done wrong. Just like with crimes, the punishment is usually selected by the dominant partner to fit the crime, however it is also common to let the submissive partner select his own punishment.
Punishment can come in physical and mental forms and can also include denial of certain pleasures or rights. Many people see physical punishments as less severe. Especially people involved in 24/7 relationships often see mental punishments as the only real form punishment and discount the physical aspects as play.

Physical Punishments

Physical punishment usually centers around the infliction of pain. While most of the S&M practices on this site can serve as a form of punishment, here are some of the most common forms:

  • Spankings or whipping are usually on the top of the list. The number of spanks is usually predetermined accoring to how severe the punishment is supposed to be. The submissive partner is often made to count the number of slaps. Any miscount usually resets the counter back to 0.
  • Prolonged bondage is also often used. Here, the restrictions of the blood circulation as well as pain induced by the limited amount of motion allowed serve as punishment.
  • Wearing of chastity devices.
  • Torture of the genitals or other body parts depending on the offense

Mental Punishment

Mental punishments come in as many flavors as physical punishment. Usually forms humiliation or orgasm denial are used although deeply submissive people often say that the dominant partner’s expression of disappointment is the worst punishment for them.
